Aside from poker, Caribbean Stud Poker is one of the faster growing casino games. It used to be hard to find a place to play, but most casinos today have it. And you’ll always find it at any decent online casino.
I think the game exploded, because it’s a snap to learn and it’s a fun social game. Playing it alone is fun too, but there’s nothing quite like a full and rowdy table of Caribbean Stud Poker players.
Okay, let’s jump into the game and go over some of the rules. If you don’t know how to play and you want to start at the beginning, we’ve got another article on this site that does this.
First, you need to Ante up. Let’s imagine that you’ve just put $5 down. After you get your cards, you need to evaluate them and decide if you want to stay in the hand. Here’s the big decision of the game. If you want to quit, you fold. If not, you need to double your Ante and push this amount to the Bet area. So, in our example, we had a $5 Ante. The Bet would be $10 and we’d end up with $15 on the table.
How you win money
You’re playing against the dealer only. If the dealer has a hand rank of Ace-King or better, it’s game on. If not, your Ante bet is paid even money and your Bet wager is pushed back to you.
If the dealer qualifies, and you beat the dealer’s hand, your Ante is paid even money, but your Bet wager is paid according to your hand rank. Here’s the pay chart:
One Pair or nothing: even money
Two Pair: 2:1
Three of a Kind: 3:1
Straight: 4:1
Flush: 5:1
Full House: 7:1
Four of a Kind: 20:1
Straight Flush: 50:1
Royal Flush: 100:1
Remember, the “odds” are paid to your Bet wager only. If you played the $1 progressive, you’ll receive even money for a Flush or better.
And don’t forget that the dealer must qualify or your beautiful hand gets paid nothing but the even money on the Ante wager. That’s why I love to play the progressive always.
Example Hand
Okay, let’s run through a quick example. First, you place a $10 wager on the table and $1 in the progressive-it’s always just a buck. You get your cards and you have a flush. Obviously, you want to stay in this hand, so you place the $20 Bet wager to stay in.
Let me point out that your Bet wager is always 2x the Ante. You can’t bet more or less ever.
The dealer turns the hand over and has two pair-you win. Your Ante wager is paid $10 and your Bet wager is paid $100 (5:1), for a total of $110 won on the hand. But wait! You played the progressive, so you’ll be paid that bonus too.
The progressive bonus varies and we’ll talk about it in another article.

The following is the ordering of hands, along with a few simple definitions. The strongest hand wins. This ordering is from weakest to strongest.
• High card: In the series of cards from 2 through Ace, the higher the card number, the higher the rank of the card. After 10 come, in order, Jack, Queen, King, and Ace. The Ace is the highest ranked card, the high card.
• Pair: Any two cards of the same rank. For example, 2 threes, two Jacks, two Aces.
• Two Pair Two sets of two cards of the same rank. For example, 2 Queens and 2 fives.
• Three of a kind: Also called trips. For example, 3 sevens.
• Straight: Five cards in sequential rank order, in a row. For example: 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen. An ace may be used as either a 1 or the highest card as in: A, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10, Jack, Queen, King, Ace. Please note that King, Ace, 2, 3, 4 is not a straight.
• Flush: Five cards of the same suit. For example, five cards, all of Clubs.
• Full House: A combination of three of a kind and a pair.
• Four of a kind: For example, 4 Kings.
• Straight Flush: A straight (5 in a row) all of the same suit. In some cases, the kicker card breaks a tie. This applies when two players have the same winning pair or two pair. The kicker card is the best high card after the pair.
• Royal Flush: The highest straight flush and highest possible hand, consisting of 10, J, Q, K, A of the same suit.

Straights are determined by the high card. For example, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 beats 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.
Where there are two flushes in a hand, the highest different card determines the winner. For example, a spade flush of K, Q, 10, 4, 3 beats a spade flush of K, Q, 9, 4, 3. In Hold’em and Omaha, where there are shared board cards, this scenario happens on occasion. In 7 Card or 5 Card Stud, where there are no shared cards, it is possible for there to be flushes from different suits. In poker, there is no ordering of suits. Therefore, a spade flush of K, Q, 10, 4, 3 ties a club flush of K, Q, 10, 4, 3.
In a recent article, I talked about how I love to play Pai Gow and I gave you a little intro into the game. Today, I’m starting a beginner’s series on how to play Pai Gow. It’s an easy game to learn and we’ll take our time-going over everything in detail.
Quick Recap
Pai Gow is played with your typical 52-card deck and one joker card. You’ll receive seven cards and you’ll divide them into two hands. Your job is to beat the bank’s hand and as a player, you’ll have the chance to be the bank-unless the casino doesn’t offer that option.
Getting Started
The invention and growth of online casinos has really helped the low-limit Pai Gow players. It used to be that you’d have a tough time finding a Pai Gow game lower than $10 and even $10 Pai Gow games were hard.
Today, you can just jump online and find $5 Pai Gow games all over the Internet.
After you make your wager-and other player’s do the same-the dealer shuffles up the deck and deals out seven cards per hand spot. It’s important to note that the entire deck is used for each hand-unlike Blackjack where you just keep playing through the deck until it’s gone.
After this is complete, the hands at the spots where there are no players are taken. Yes, the dealer deals to empty spots. This is part of the game play. So, unlike Blackjack where players coming and going can affect hands, it doesn’t matter in Pai Gow.
We’ll talk about the bank later, but now that the hands are dealt and the bank is decided, it’s time to examine your hand. You’re going to break up your seven cards into two hands. The first hand will consist of one five-card hand, which is your best hand. Then the remaining two cards will make up your “2nd Highest” hand.
Now, before you rush out and player, there’s one important item you need to know. Your five-card hand MUST be the highest-ranking hand or you forfeit your money. For instance, you couldn’t put two Aces are your two-card hand and then have a pair of 2s as your five-card hand.
The strategy comes in decided how far to go. For instance, do you go with two pair as your highest hand and nothing as your 2nd highest hand or do you break them up? We’ll go over Pai Gow strategy in other articles.
Time To Win
Once all the hands are set, meaning they’ve all been split into the highest and 2nd highest hands, it’s time for the dealer to play. The dealer (not always the bank) will turn over the hand and set it according to casino rules.
To win, both of your hands need to beat both of the Banker’s hands. If you win one and lose one, it’s a push. Should one of your hands be exactly like one of the Banker’s hands, it’s called a “copy” and the Banker wins the hand.

Card games are great because there is such a variety to choose from. Don’t like euchre? Don’t worry, you can try poker or rummy instead. Card games provide literally endless hours of fun. If your guests have been playing poker for hours, change it up and teach them canasta or bid euchre instead. There are enough good card games to keep any party nothing but fun.
